Volkswagen at Geneva

VW took the covers off the new Golf estate (above) at Geneva today, a variant of the current Golf that we thought may never arrive, given the presence of the spacious Golf Plus. But 1.2 million Golf Estate sales since 1993 tell their own story, so here's the new one.

It'll have the same engine range as the regular Golf, although probably without the base 75bhp 1.4-litre (too slow) and the top-of-the-range 2.0 197bhp TFSI from the GTi (too quick). The boot is massive, at 690-litres with the rear seats up, or 1,550-litres with the seats folded flat. No prices yet, but expect to see it on sale by late Summer.

More significantly, Geneva is also the European debut for the Passat BlueMotion (top), which uses a modified version of the evergreen 1.9-litre TDI diesel engine. It still pumps out 105bhp, but thanks to some internal modifications it now returns an average of 5.1-litres per 100km (55mpg) and emits just 136g/km of CO2, a remarkable figure for a big car like a Passat. It also gets smoother aerodynamics, thanks to a flat undertray, and a gear-shift indicator to help you drive ever more economically. And given the EU's recent stance on motoring CO2 emissions, it couldn't have come soon enough for VW.
