New CTS will get diesel

Cadillac has given European buyers a first look at the all-new CTS saloon at Geneva, and it's looking for a bigger slice of the lucrative premium market than the previous version managed.

It gets an new direct-injection 300bhp 3.6-litre V6, whcih will run alongside the existing 3.6 and 2.8-litre engines. And this time round, a diesel is definitely in the range, although Cadillac hasn't released any firm details on that yet.

The new CTS gets a vastly improved interior (cabin quality is a major criticism of the current model) and styling that draws on the old CTS but manages to look more elegant and imposing. And for the first time there's a four-wheel-drive option too. No prices yet, but like the current CTS, it should be very aggressively priced comapred to equivalent BMWs, Audis and Mercedes.

UPDATE: Cadillac has just released details of the CTS' diesel engine, which will be a new 2.9-litre V6 with 250bhp and 550Nm of torque. No firgures for fuel economy or CO2 emissions have been mentioned as yet.

“We expect the V-6 diesel to be highly competitive in the European luxury segment,” said Jim Taylor, Cadillac General Manager. “With its excellent low-end torque and its high power output, it is a great fit with Cadillac’s performance-oriented brand character.”

The bad news? You'll have to wait till 2009 if you want a CTS with an oil-burner.
