Opel Corsa OPC (UPDATED)

We're not normally too enthusiastic about Opel's high-performance OPC line-up (too much power, not enough finesse) but the first sighting of this, the new Corsa OPC at the Geneva Motor Show has got us a little more interested.

First off, it uses a turbocharged 160bhp four-cylinder engine, which power-wise, is right on the money for the quick supermini segment. Second, even with a basic 1.2-litre engine, we really like the way the standard Corsa goes, stops and steers, so with a lower, sportier chassis and appropriate steering tweaks, we suspect that the OPC could actually be the best Corsa yet. Which would make it a very, very good car indeed.

Expect it to be priced aggressively against the Ford Fiesta ST and Mini Cooper S with a sticker of around the €27k mark, when it arrives on Irish shores in the summer.

UPDATE: Opel Ireland has just announced prices for the Corsa OPC. It starts at €28,995, with ESP, 17" alloys and air conditioning as standard. 18" wheels are an option and Opel is claiming that, in spite of its high performance it returns 7.9l/100km (35mpg).
