More Bio-Power from Saab

Yes it's a Saab 9-5, and no, it isn't the eagerly-awaited all-new Saab 9-5 which is likely to be the car that raises Saab back up to its old heights as the thinking man's luxury car.

But what it is is the Saab E100 concept, a car that showcases Saab's efforts in the area of bio-fuels. It uses the same 2.0-litre turbo engine that is familiar from the current 9-5 and 9-5 Bio-Power. Running on regular unleaded, it produces 150bhp. Running on E85 bio-ethanol it produces 180bhp. But in the E100 concept, it runs on 100% bio-ethanol and produces 300bhp. From a 2.0-litre engine. And of course, effectively produces no CO2 emissions, because its fuel comes from crops that absorb CO2 from the atmosphere.

The E100 is part of Saab's drive to encourage European governments to get behind a bio-fuel revolution and expand and improve the bio-fuel network. It also, deliberately ironically considering it runs on distilled fuel, incorporates Saab's award-winning alco-key, which requires the driver to blow into a breathalyser before releasing the engine's imobiliser.
