Hyundai unveils new hatch

Hyundai i30

This is the new Hyundai i30, which, along with the rest of the motoring world and their motorised dog, will be rocking up at the Geneva Motor Show next week.

It's a Ford Focus-sized hatch, based on the same component set as the Kia Ceed, so you'll be able to buy 1.4-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel versions, but with Hyundai aiming at an older customer base than Kia, the i30 will get softer, more comfort-oriented chassis settings than the Kia.

Even more significant is the name, which previews Hyundai's move away from 'name' names to numerical model designations. With the family hatch being i30, we'd guess that the Sonata will eventually become i50, the Tuscon i60, the Santa Fe i70 and the Accent and Picanto-based new city car i20 and i10. Or it could all be an elaborate hoax to throw us off the scent of the new car's name, and that last paragraph could be utter rubbish...

Expect to see it on sale by the Autumn, replacing the woeful Elantra, and there'll be an estate and quite likely a convertible version too.
