Phony Registrations Warning
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency in the UK has warned that 20,000 blank vehicle registration documents have been recently stolen and may be used to 'ring' stolen cars to attempt to pass them off as legitimate. Several thousand Irish car buyers import second-hand cars from the UK and Northern Ireland every year, and are potential victims of this scam.
The Gardai are warning potential buyers that if they purchase a car which subsequently turns out to be stolen property, that car can be siezed from them and returned to its rightful owner (or, more likely the insurance company that paid out for its loss) wthout any compensation.
The missing registration documents carry the prefix BG and the document numbers run from BG 9167501 to BG 9190500. If you are offered for sale a car with one of these documents, DO NOT BUY IT but alert the Gardai and the DVLA with the details of the vendor. The numbers appear at the top right of the V5 registration document.
