New Twingo will get right-hand-drive

It's been a busy day on the Renault stand at the Geneva Motor Show. Not only has the all-new Twingo (above) been unveiled, and confirmed to be coming with right-hand-drive, but there are two new concepts on the stand, one based on the Clio, one a medium 4x4 and a new environmentally-friendly engine.

Phew. First up is the new Twingo, which platform-shares with the Clio, Modus and Nissan Micra, but is shorter than all of them. The original 1991 Twingo revolutionised small cars, with its Espace-aping monobox shape and cute styling, but this new one looks much more conventional. It certainly looks stylish enough to give the Toyota Aygo and Fiat Panda a run for their money in the city car segement, though.

It also debuts a new engine for Renault, the 1.2-litre turbocharged TSE unit. It's based on the familiar 1.2 petrol engine from the Clio, but gains a low-inertia turbocharger to pump out 100bhp, return 5.1-litres per 100km economy and emit just 140g/km of CO2. The regular 1.2-litre makes an appearance too, in 60bhp and 80bhp 16V forms, as well as the familiar 1.5-litre dCi diesel.

Across the stand is the Clio Grand Tourer concept (middle), a sporty GT estate which you can expect to see making production to take on the Mini Clubman and the forthcoming 207 SW. The concept places the emphasis very much on the sporty end of things, with a rear diffuser and a 2.0-litre petrol engine, but you can safely expect the production version to be more practically-minded.

Finally, and being shown for the second-time in a year, is the Koleos concept (top), the almost-production-ready SUV that will be Renault's entry into the lucrative SUV market. When it reaches production (and you can expect it to remain visually almost unchanged) it'll platform-share with Nissan's X-Trail and use Renault's acclaimed 150bhp 2.0-litre dCi diesel.
