Is this the new 7 Series? Maybe not...

The BMW Concept CS, on show at the Shanghai Motor Show this week, COULD be a big nod in the direction of the next-generation 7 Series. Or it could be something utterly different.

BMW is rapidly expanding its model ranges to include more niche cars, and in the next couple of years we'll be seeing an X6 (sort of a 4x4 coupe) and a five-seat MPV based on the 3 Series. The Concept CS could be one of two things. It could be a preview of BMW's new styling language that will make its debut on the 2009 7 Series, or it could be that BMW is planning a Mercedes CLS-rival that will either be based on the 5 Series platform and mirror the swoopy Merc price-for-price, or could even be a 7 Series + model, with four-door coupe styling, a V12 engine based on the M5's V10 unit and a price tag of at least €200,000. Stranger things have happened, and such a car could share components and chassis with the forthcoming new Rolls-Royce rival to the Bentley Continental Flying Spur. We await BMW's final decision with interest...
